Recife, Brazil. Man holding the deity Iansã (African god of Wind and Storms) for the annual ceremony ‘Festa do Fogo’ (Festival of Fire). Earlier this year, associations of Candomblé and Umbanda across the country were the target of Youtube videos posted by Evangelical denominations, allowed to remain online by Federal Judge Eugenio de Araujo, who stated “afro-Brazilian practices do not constitute religions” since they are not based on a text (such as the Bible or Koran) and do not possess a hierarchical structure or one unique God to be worshipped.
